(From a letter from Pastor Kent sent to the Zion community on August 9, 2017)

Dear Members and Friends of Zion Lutheran Church,

Today I need to fill you in on an important shift in my calling…

For 12 years I’ve had the joyful and honorable calling of serving as your pastor. I’ve often thought to myself, “you know, there’s really no other congregation in the world that I would rather serve than Zion!”

But now an unexpected and different kind of call has been placed upon me. This is not a call to serve another congregation. Rather, this is a call that relates to about 160 congregations!

Specifically, I’ve been called to serve on our Bishop’s staff as the Director of Leadership Development and Congregational Vitality. The role will also involve serving our denomination (ELCA) in Northwestern Ohio as the Director of Evangelical Mission. The position is basically a joint partnership between our synod and the ELCA. Thankfully it will not require relocation.

I want you to know that I did not seek this call. I love Zion. Each Saturday and Sunday I love the beautiful sights and sounds of worshipping with you and communing together. And when I arrive at Zion each weekday, I love the beautiful sights and sounds of our childcare staff and children learning and playing together. You are all second to none…I will miss you!

The way you welcomed the rest of my family means the world to me, too. You’ve provided opportunity for my wife, Colleen, to help out with youth ministry and music through the years and you’ve helped nurture all three of our children (Chase, Clay, and Karis)! Quite simply, it’s been an awesome call…one I honestly thought I might joyfully continue until my retirement! Instead, it looks like my last Sunday at Zion will be September 17, 2017.

Regarding the rest of my family, it’s possible that Colleen and Karis might continue to worship here semi-regularly for the time-being. (I doubt that they are going to want to follow me around as I preach in a different congregation 3-4 times a month!) Plus it’s already time to start registering people for next Summer’s ELCA National Youth Gathering in Houston. Colleen’s willing to organize and coordinate it again, so that it doesn’t fall through the cracks in transition. It’s also Karis’ senior year, and she loves worshipping here. So we’ll see…

Of course, this development affects the internship program as well. The intern that originally had been assigned to Zion has now been reassigned to St. John Lutheran Church in Celina. I believe he was introduced to their congregation last weekend.

From here on out we’ll all want to take some time to remember and give thanks for what, by the grace of God, we’ve been able to experience together during this period in Zion’s history. (In September’s newsletter I’ll try to include a partial list.) We’ll also want to take some time to say our goodbyes as we prepare to embrace our respective futures in God’s hands.

May the Lord continue to bless you always!

In Christ,

Pastor Kent

RitterOrdinationClergy

Former Zion Intern, Cindy Ritter, was Ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament (the Lutheran way of saying she will be a pastor) on Saturday, January 18th at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Toledo at 10:30 a.m. Intern Cindy is kneeling in the picture above just as gathered clergy are preparing for the laying on of hands. She has been called to serve as Pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Findlay, OH. Almost 30 Zion members attended the event. Pastor Kent served as the Assisting Minister, George Carrington read one of the lessons, a nice group of Zion members sang in the combined choir, Zion's SOAR team joined with Stony Ridge's team to sing the prologue, and Diana Schneider baked the Communion Bread. For a very nice gallary of pictures from the event, click HERE (note: you might need to have a Facebook account to view the pictures).

The first topic is entitled: "How to Love People You Don't Like."
